On Being Swallowed By Revisions

When I last saw you guys (online...on this blog...or twitter...or facebook....but mostly on this blog) I was revising.

And guess what?

I still am!

Needless to say, it has not been happening as quickly as I would have hoped for. This is mostly due to the fact that:

A) I'm working A LOT. And have far less time than I usually give myself to write/revise/edit.
B) My sister's wedding is in a few weeks. I'm maid of honor. And I'm a freaking amazing maid of honor (just saying...) and I have far less time than I usually give myself to write/revise/edit.
C) It's 108 degrees outside you guys! I don't know about you, but my body doesn't always want to work in these conditions. And when my body says no, my mind has a very hard time convincing it otherwise--time it should be spending on writing/revising/editing.

So...I'm a little behind.

The GOOD news though is it's going well. I've already taken the chapters that are completed (for now) to a whole other level. Which honestly wasn't too hard because my first draft really stunk.

Also I've basically rewritten EVERY. SINGLE. WORD.

That makes things slow down as well.

So I'm still here. And I didn't want to neglect the blog any longer.

Also...I have a super cool YA event in the works for this fall. More details to come soon!

How's everyone else surviving the heat? How's everyone else's writing/revising/editing/reading going?

  1. Revisions are so hard to stick to. I totally sympathize. Sounds like you have so much on your plate anyway...you'll bet there. :)

    1. Revisions ARE hard. And I'm sticking to them, but...not as often as I'd prefer. Thanks for the encouragement, Raquel!

  3. I currently have three fans going at once in the house and it's still blazing hot. Ugh, I feel for you! Both on the revision front and the heat front. ;)

  4. Well, as you know, I've just reached the part where I need to rewrite EVERY. SINGLE. WORD. It may take me a year, but I hope the novel's stronger for it. Yours will be too. I know it!

You think this heat is rough? Try working with a broken air conditioner!

    1. You can do it, Joanne!!!!!! Oh gosh, see I spend part of my day outside and moving around in places with no air conditioning and that just drains me by the time I'm IN air conditioning.

  5. *flails pom poms around* *drops them by accident* ...I was never a good cheerleader. Good luck revising, Frankie! I know you can do it and finish the rewrites and kick some butt! You have awesome crit partners and an agent who never gives up on your side. Have faith in yourself.
I just got a critique back on a partial (well, 30pgs) from an agent and it was...meh. Blunt and made me cry. After crying (oi!), I looked at her notes again and realized she was kind of right. I'm slowly working on making my main character less bratty and more likeable especially in the beginning of the novel. I'm going to go through the entire thing and change some of her dialogue and maybe add a few scenes. Sigh......REVISING IS HARD!

Hope you have a wonderful time at your sister's wedding! Working=$$$$. Annnnd I'm excited for your fall YA event. I can't wait to hear about it!

    1. Awww thanks, Rachel!!! :) awww, those unlikeable characters. You know how I feel about them...they all get big squishy hugs. We just need to make our readers see why we love these prickly types. Good luck revising. Hard as it might be--that sort of feedback is awesome! I can't wait for my agent to tear this apart (well hopefully not completely apart).

I can' wait for my sister's wedding. Because A) it will be FUN and B) it'll be over. I can have my life back.

I'll have more info on the YA Event soon! All I can say now is it's free and open to the public.

(this is an epically long reply--longer than my blog post I think...better stop)

  6. Oh girl. I can't even imaging rewriting every single word. You can do it!!!

I just finished a round of revisions for my first R&R (I'm in the querying trenches) but it went surprisingly really well, and I love my story even more now.

    1. Ha--well my one CP basically said...um, don't even bother fixing most of these sentences, just rewrite them from scratch. So I'm kind of looking at what I wrote and then writing new stuff on top and deleting the old. Ooooh good luck on the R+R that's exciting!!!! So glad to hear you love your story more--that counts for so much.
