Three Things on a Thursday

1. I'm teaching Argument in my English class and I wanted my students to self-debate an issue. First by arguing for one side, and then completely arguing for the other. The idea was to learn how to anticipate what your opponent might say in advance so they could refute the argument before it came.

Well, the topic offered to discuss by one of the students was violence on tv.

And immediately my mind goes to this:

And the whole time we're discussing violence on tv, I have Cher's speech in my head and I'm laughing to myself.

And then I discover THIS!

That not only does my class have NO idea what Cher's Violence in the Media Speech is (Nor do they have it MEMORIZED) but they haven't even SEEN Clueless!

WHAT!!!????!!!!?????!!!??????!!!?????

How!?!?!?!? How!?!?!?!?! How?!?!?!!?

Why!?!?!?!?!?! Why?!?!?!?!?!? Why?!?!!!!!??

I mean, this is coming from the girl who put this on the internet last year:

Am so horrified by this, and possibility I am getting old and out of touch, I can only see one solution.

I must fail them all.

2. The time has come again for me to do something I REALLY REALLY hate.

Laundry!

Multiply this by 100 and you'll have an idea of my situation!

But this evil is absolutely necessary because I must have cleanliness and I must have order (but not as much order as Delores Umbridge because that kind of order is just too much). Also, I must have clothes I can wear. And pack.... Because...

3. At the most Ungodly hour imaginable, I am leaving Friday morning to fly here!
SAN FRANCISCO!
Yay!!!

So there you have it--my Thursday Three!

Also, please please please tell me you guys have Clueless memorized!

  1. Hahaha! That video is hilarious! And now I feel outdated that people have not seen Clueless or have any idea of that movie. It's one of my favorites!!

Have fun in San Francisco!! I've only been there once, and I would love-love to go back one day!

  2. I don't have it memorized, but my daughters have made me watch it so often it is surprising that I don't.

    Those Hatians.

  3. @amber d* Mine too! Clueless is classic--oh I actually said that to my class and then they really looked at me like I was old! And yay for San Fran--I'm looking forward to it.

@Shelley, well if we just rearrange a few things we could certainly party with the Haitians!

  4. I can't say I have Clueless memorized, nor can I say I'm unhappy about that.

I can tell you that, over the years, I've had to explain to my students the following:

(Yes, I have a list saved. And yes, I'm going to share some - more for my own amusement than yours. Hey, you brought it up...)

    1. Bon Jovi (That killed me. I even played them some songs - nothing. Not even Living on a Prayer.)

    2. Matchbox 20

    3. Saved by the Bell (I understood - it just made me feel old. REALLY old!)

    4. Journey (NO EXCUSE!)

    5. Grease (See above)

  5. Did you find a big enough suitcase yet? :-)

  6. The students I teach were born the year I graduated high school, and this depresses me to no end. They never get ANY of my references. It makes me feel so old.

But I think not knowing Clueless should be illegal. Seriously.

  7. I do know Clueless and you are not old. I'm old, so don't think that. Thanks for reminding me I have to do laundry too.
    Have a wonderful time!

  8. Well, I don't exactly have Clueless memorized but I saw it. Once.

You are not old. And neither is Christine. I'M OLD! Case closed.

Have a fantastic time in San Francisco. You are so lucky!

  9. I teach argument too and the other day we were discussing an article that referred to the old video game, "Pong". Only two of my students had ever heard of it. :o(

If you haven't, or haven't ever played it, then that definitely puts you in the young category. If you have, then you are as old as me, which certainly makes you young because I'm not prepared to be old yet!

Either way, you're right. There's only one possible course of action: they'll all have to fail. :o)
