Pull Over!

So at Philly Lit Night this weekend (which was EPIC and awesome and fun and you should all come next time in May) we learned that Simon C. Larter writes when he's driving.

Stay off the road! Simon just had an epiphany!
He even pulled out proof and apparently his writing was semi-readable.

The car is one of my favorite places to get inspiration--usually when I'm driving I don't get ideas--I hear dialogue. Entire conversations will just play out in my head (and they always seem to be crucial turning point convos) as I drive.

I may commit a lot of on the road felonies (cough knee-driving-cough) but I can't write and drive. So when I'm in a place where I'm drafting a new story, I'm prone to suddenly pulling over to the side of the road and frantically grabbing at my notebook.
GUYS! Frankie parked her car again. I think she's having an idea...

So what about you guys?
Who writes and drives? Who gets ideas when they drive? And who is a freak like me and hears voices when they're on the road?

  1. I'm a freak like you and have voices in my head holding full conversations while driving. It's distracting. I pull over and write, though. Scary Simon. Although, I guess he hasn't had an accident so maybe he's on to something. It's a special talent.
It was so much fun. I will definitely stay for dinner next time. Promise. :)

  2. Simon has admitted this before...makes me glad I don't live in PA! :) Sadly, when driving I'm mostly yelling at the people around me who are cutting me off or tailgating...my writing voices come in the middle of the night.

  3. Maybe I shouldn't drive in Philly...lol. I actually have never gotten an idea while driving maybe I should pay attention to ideas instead of the road and see if that will work out for a new WIP?

  4. I deny everything. For the official record, I only brainstorm while driving. And possible sketch very short notes to myself in the most safe and road-aware manner possible. Yes. *nods*

  5. Uh, nope. I definitely do not write while driving. I can barely put lipstick on and drive at the same time. :-)

  6. I'm a "jotter-downer" in the car too. Like, Christine, I do a TON of thinking in my car. But only when my car is Kid-Free!!! I can't think deeply with my boys talking to me from the back seat.

I'm bummed I couldn't make this past meeting. I'm definitely coming to the next one. For sure.

  7. Oh, I always get ideas in the car! But only when I'm alone. And I couldn't POSSIBLY write them down while driving. I keep telling myself I'm gonna get a digital voice recorder, but in the meantime, I repeat the idea over and over until I can safely pull off and jot it down!

Glad you had fun at Philly Lit Night. Maybe next time (*sighs*).

  8. LOL! I get ideas in the car a lot, but I'm a huge nerd and usually call myself to leave a voicemail with everything I'm thinking of, so I don't have to stop...

  9. I too get a lot of ideas in the car. I can sometimes come up with complete conversations and scene descriptions while I am driving. I'm afraid I'm guilty of typing notes into my phone while in the car, BUT only at red lights! Anything really long and I pull over.

Had a lot of fun at Philly Lit Night and am looking forward to the next meeting.

  10. I always have ideas while I'm driving!

I use the microphone app on my iPhone to record the idea. It makes me feel important.

  11. I wish i could have made the event this time! I remember at the last meetup Simon told us about his writing and driving and I was glad I took the train into the city.

Ideas - I usually get them in shower but I have also had them in the car, especially on long drives. A new novel idea came into my head during one particular heinous ride down the Schuylkill!

  12. Hi Frankie. Love your blog. I get ideas all the time in my car. Pulling over all the time meant that I never got where I was going (at least not on time), so I started using the voice recorder ap on my phone to store all the ideas until I got to where and when I could write them all down. Works great. I highly recommend it!
