#SPEAKloudly + Giveaway

Wow. I've just read so many posts about the latest book banner and his attack on Laurie Halse Anderson's brilliant, amazing and should-be-required-reading SPEAK!

I don't think there is anymore I can say at this point that hasn't been said if you're reading through the blogosphere. I am completely against book banning--I personally do not believe that anyone has the right to decide what someone can and can't read. At all!

Book bannings happen unfortunately all the time.

But this latest attack is beyond disgusting. To actually refer to the rape in SPEAK as soft porn is the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard.

If you need some catch up, here is the link to Laurie Halse Anderson's blog and response.

CJ Redwine also wrote a heartbreakingly beautiful post on why this book is so important to her.

We have to SPEAK up about SPEAK!!! I didn't go through the same horrors Melinda did, but I did suffer from depression in middle school. I never publicly admitted this before, but... for a period of time, I was a cutter. I cut because I was in pain, because I felt alone and because I didn't think anyone cared.

Having a book like SPEAK could have been tremendously helpful to me, because the message in there goes beyond speaking out against rape--this book is for anyone who has ever felt alone, anyone who has ever been depressed, anyone who has ever been assaulted, or any other horror and felt that they had no voice. If someone is lucky enough to never go through any of what I mentioned than at the very least they should be aware that you never know what another person is really going through. One of the most heart breaking moments for me in SPEAK is when Melinda is harassed by another student for breaking up the party--if the student had any idea what Melinda was going through I'm sure she would have reacted differently. This is a book for everyone.

Taking away SPEAK is one of the worst offenses I can think of. And the kind of ignorance spouted by the banner needs to have some light shed on it.

So what can we do?

Laurie has suggested ways to speak out on her blog and there's also a campaign on twitter to get SPEAK back on the New York Times Best Seller list--a place that this book really ought to live in forever.

I'm so proud of the way the YA community is banding together. I've never been so proud to be a part of this community. So here's what I want to do to help.

I feel SO passionately about this issue, about this book and about having SPEAK reach more readers that I am purchasing 10 copies of SPEAK.

And I'm giving them away.

If you've never read SPEAK, comment below. Or even if you already own a copy-- if you know someone who hasn't read SPEAK and might benefit from it then comment, if your library doesn't currently carry SPEAK, comment below, if you'd like to give it a to a teacher, or a counselor or anyone who might get it into the right hands, comment below. If I get 10 comments, I'll give a copy to each commenter, if I get more, I'll draw randomly. Whatever happens, I'm determined to get those books into readers' hands.

There are no rules for this giveaway. But there's one thing you should do. Comment below and ALSO if you are on twitter and/or facebook you can add the SPEAK LOUDLY twibbon to your picture by clicking HERE! I have the twibbon on both profiles.

SPEAK LOUDLY!

  1. I haven't read SPEAK, but I would like to. I would also like to pass it on to my teenage daughter and her friends to read. I would like to make sure as many young girls in our area have access to this book as possible.

  2. Never heard of it before....but considering what I've been doing lately (I recently created a website called Ask a Bipolar, I just finished a book about bipolar and I've become a proud member of NAMI) I feel that this subject should definitely be out there and banning it is ridiculous!

Awesome contest Frankie! It puts #windinmyhaaaaiiiirrrr!

  5. I don't think any of my friends have read SPEAK and I would like another copy to pass around to them. It needs to be read by more people.

  6. As I'm borrowing SPEAK from my library (picked it up this afternoon), it is my intention to read it either tonight or tomorrow morning. It is Banned Books Week, and sad that someone took this opportunity to demean the importance of SPEAKING LOUDLY about tragedies, true unrighteous tragedies that daily occur.

Scroggins wishes to SHUT US UP! But I tell him I shall SPEAK LOUDER THAN EVER!! (I'd love to win a copy of this book, btw!) :-)

  7. SPEAK is an AMAZING book. I read it as something to do on a standardized test day in 10th grade and I just fell in love with it! I recently re-read it along with Wintergirls (also fabulous) and man, it hits me to the core every time. I think every teenage girl, especially, but guy too should give it a read to fully understand this hard topic.

  9. I haven't read SPEAK, but I have heard of it before this whole thing came about. I would love to be able to read it, and, especially after today, I feel like I and others around me should. I have the Twibbon already, and have used the @SPEAKloudly hashtag. :)

  12. I read SPEAK two years ago, when I was in ninth grade. There were a couple of girls in my grade who really could relate to SPEAK because they themselves had either been raped or had been sexually abused.

Thanks for holding this contest. More people need to read this powerful book.

  13. Wow, I didn't had listened about this book yet.
I seems to be a GREAT book, and I think I need to read it because I was depressed in my school time, too. I kinda am, yet, at university. =x
I think everyone should read a book with this kind os story, we feel like bad things and feelings happen with anyone. =/
Getting this book or not, I am reading it!
And the twibbon tag is already on my profile.
    Count me on!

  14. I haven't read SPEAK - am a relatively new YA writer and new to the YA community - but after just hearing Laurie Halsie Anderson's amazing poem, I tweeted about it and posted it on FB. A free society neither burns books because of xenophobia, nor bans books because of fear or ignorance! I feel very strongly as a pediatrician and a new YA/MG writer! I'd love to win a copy of the book and also spread the word!

    Thanks!

  15. I feel the need to pass this on to as many people as possible. I'm definitely spreading the word tomorrow at school! I've read Speak and I agree that it's an absolutely important book. It's powerful, it's harrowing, and wow.

Banning important books like SPEAK brings us ten steps back from whatever progress we've made in shedding light on these issues.

Thank you for speaking so loudly.

  16. I haven't read SPEAK, but I would love to. It's always been one of those books I've "meant" to read and with this recent controversy, I'm even more determined to get my hands on a copy.

  17. Speak has been on my To Buy list for ages now. After today, it's moved to the top of the list, and I just found another book to read for Banned Books Week. I've heard amazing things about Speak and can't wait to read it myself and pass it on.

  18. Great post. I haven't read SPEAK yet, but feel so passionately about this issue that I would love to get the book back on the NYT bestseller list.

You're right. What a great community of writers we belong to. SPEAK LOUDLY.

  19. I am currently reading Speak to my English 11 students. On Friday we reached page 137, where Melinda allows herself to remember the rape. This novel has already generated thought-provoking discussions amongst my students, all of whom are riveted to Melinda's every word. I cannot imagine their thoughts when I tell them about this weekend's firestorm. I purchased 20 used copies online-worth every penny I spent.

It's great that you're showing your support and opening other people's eyes to what's happening. Thanks for sharing this, and giving out the books is a great way to get it out there too.
I'll be sure to tell my friends about this book.

  22. This is awesome, Frankie! SPEAK is one of my favorite books of all time, and such an important book -- I can't think of anyone I *wouldn't* recommend it to.

  23. I've read Speak and I thought it was amazing! Unfortunately for my friend, she has not experienced the awesomeness that is this book. I was so infuriated about the article... ugh won't even talk about it. More people need to read this! I was in the honors english class last year, but the regular english class read Speak and I am glad they did :) I wish that the honors class could have read it too though.

  24. Great post Frankie! HUGE round of applause to you! This guy is insane. The only person who can censor my reading material is my mom and even she doesn't do that, because she believes in the right to read.

I've never read SPEAK before but my friend and I watched the movie recently--and we were speechless. Rape isn't an easy thing to talk about and it's sick that this guy thinks it's soft porn! What the hell?! That's disgusting, in so many ways. *shudders* To be honest, in a way, I could relate to Melinda and if this guy thinks it's exciting to be sexually assaulted/abused, he NEEDS to be put away, because his mind is completely off base with reality.

Thanks for the giveaway. ;) And for SPEAKING loudly about this!

  28. I haven't read Speak yet but I would really like to. I've read Wintergirls by the same author, and I'm sure Speak is just as powerful. This type of book needs to be spread as widely as possible, not banned.

  29. Speak is such an amazing novel, and I think that's why there's been such an intense backlash against the article. I did my best to bring light to it by blogging, tweeting, and twibbon-ing about it! thank you for such a fab giveaway!

  30. I have not read SPEAK. I would like to give this to my teenager to read. I think it is important that kids, especially victims, have a voice.

  33. I've never had the chance to read this book before, which I'm now beginning to see is a crime in itself. It's heartbreaking that so many people are afraid of beautifully written, honest things. Thanks for sharing, Frankie. I'll be sure to pass on the word.

  34. Keri (Twilighter1981)September 19, 2010 at 8:06 PM

I'd love to read it! I've seen the movie and really liked it. This book would have been an amazing help to me as a teen. I was molested and raped in my younger years and never spoke up about it! This story could have empowered me. Imagin what it could do for both girls and boys when it comes to this topic! lets do it!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I haven't read it yet. In fact, I hadn't even heard of it until today. It's so sad that some closed-minded person is trying to silence its message

  36. I've never read it before but I've only heard great things about it. Book banning is ridiculous!

  38. I haven't read SPEAK, but I've been reading all about it across the blogosphere, and I'd love to read it. The issues it addresses are important to support!

  39. I have read SPEAK and it changed my life. It is a beautiful novel filled with real truth.

Frankie, be proud for writing this post, for being a voice.

    Blessings to you!

  40. I own and have read SPEAK. And I can relate to eveything you said, Frankie. Except for me it all happened while I was in university.

I'm glad the news has made the blogosphere. It lets teenagers who have been raped or sexually assaulted know that we do care. That we do want them to have hope.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I read so many of these posts in a row, but it wasn't until I got to yours that I actually cried. I dunno, but all of these heartbreaking things about wonderful people that I've gotten to know through the blogosphere are coming out today, and it's a wonderful and also a scary thing. Scary because, well, in many other cases, to speak of such things would be to invite misunderstanding, scorn, maybe even ridicule. Wonderful because here, we are all gathered together, sharing different but ultimately similar experiences of disempowerment, which makes Melinda's story in SPEAK all the more powerful: it unites people who've felt alone all their lives. So thank you for sharing. I think I'll be writing my own post soon.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I have yet to read SPEAK but it has officially jumped to the top of my TBR pile as soon as I get my hands on a copy. What this man is doing is absolutely ridiculous and I honestly don't see where he gets off saying this about books that so many have loved.

This is an awesome giveaway and a great way to get this book back where it belongs!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I haven't actually read SPEAK yet. But even so, I posted about this on my own blog:

    http://juniper-breeze.blogspot.com/2010/09/speakloudly.html

I think what you're doing is pretty amazing. Not only is it helping bring SPEAK back on the bestsellers list, it's also getting the book into the hands of people who might need it. I know so many people who could use this book in tough times, and I think it's a crime to ban something like this. It could, quite honesty, quite bluntly, put kids in danger, if you really think about it. Banning is never a good thing.

Anyways, great post, and awesome giveaway!! Even if I don't win a book, I know they'll be put to good use. :)

  44. I came across this book a few months ago at Walmart. I was desperate to find something for my oldest daughter to read, so I read the blurb, and felt that the topic was definitely something she should be reading/learning/preparing to know more about at her age. I brought it home. I went online and checked it out to read other reader's opinions (adults especially). Then I skimmed through it. Did I read every word? No. But my daughter read it all. (And that's a hard thing to get her to do.) And I do not regret it, at ALL. I am glad I bought it. I bought the movie too, because I have three girls, and I would much rather them be prepared.

So after that long rant, I just wanted to thank you for sharing this book with others, Frankie. I would share it with any of my daughter's friends in a heartbeat (after their parents approved, of course, because that's the issue - it's up to EACH parent to decide if their child reads it, no one person).

  46. I haven't read it yet, but have wanted to for a long time... I love that this is becoming such an outcry that Mr. Scroggins' intention is having the reverse effect. Thanks for doing this contest and supporting the book--I am against any banning of any book at any time, anywhere, and think it should be recognized as unconstitutional and thus illegal to remove any book from any school library or district.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I haven't read it, but I'm going to buy myself a copy and then donate it to my local library in the hope that it might help someone in need.

  48. Having been a "victim" of date rape as a teen (and having known a number of other girls who were victimized), I would love to read this book. (The older that I get, the more I hate the word "victim", as I know that often what makes someone a victim is that they stay in a position that allows themselves to be one.)

    ReplyDelete
  53. I haven't read it. But, I work with teen mothers. Each one of them, except for one, yes, that's 99% of them, have dealt with rape or molestation during their childhood. This issue needs to be addressed, not banned, and forbidden to be spoken about. If it takes a book to be able to allow a teen to speak about it, than so be it. Until, we can speak openly about this, the cycle will never be broken. As for the man that wants to ban this book. He wraps himself in a cloak of moral superiority, and thinks this allows him to make judgements for everyone else. No thanks, I would rather bring these issues up and face them down, than allow anyone else to be hurt by them.
I would love to read this book, and share it with others.

  54. Urgh, I know exactly what you mean...I think restrictions on books are ridiculous, I mean everybody is entitled to read what they want, it's their choice. It's a free country after all.

I remember feeling outraged when the Harry Potter books had been considered being banned from children libraries because it's "witchcraft" and might brainwish kids. If you went about with that kind of rule, soooo many books would have to be banned!

Whew...sorry for my rant. xD I haven't read Speak but it sounds great!

  57. I have not read Speak but it was one that has been on my "to read list," I knew the premise of the book.
I agree with what you said. We have no idea of knowing the effect a book can have on a person. It can be the one thing that changes their life, gives them confidence or make them feel like they are not alone. Why would we want to take away something that could potentially help someone else even if it wasn't us it was helping.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Great idea! I was inspired and given enough courage to share my own story thanks to this, and I think that's exactly what Speak is about. I haven't read Speak yet (although I saw the movie), but I ordered my own copy so please donate one somewhere that really needs it.

  81. I think of books that I had as a kid and I think while "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret" was a nice little coming of age story, it didn't really encompass what I might have needed. "Speak" sounds like a story that would have been a great read for me in my teens. Books like this are important to readers to help them get through things that no one wants to talk about. Sometimes books give readers the courage they need to move forward.

Banning books makes me so angry I would need 80 comments to cover it. I'll just say this...no book will ever be banned in my house.

  88. I have read Speak before, but I don't own a copy. I want to review it so much in liaison with the controversy about. I felt personally attacked when I heard of this news last Sunday. I was in a rage, because I had connected with the book so profoundly, I thought he was slandering my character. This novel is so much more than rape (who the hell thinks of rape as "soft porn"? that's disgusting), sex, and teenage debauchery. It goes beyond that, into the depths of despair. Then it relinquishes its hold on you, and gives you the courage to speak up, to overcome loss. To however it helps you. I feel appalled when I think of how many teenagers would be cut off from the topics these books cover.

Whenever I hear about this issue, my blood boils. No joke. I just... ugh. It makes me a-damned-shamed to call myself a Christian and be lumped in with this bozo advocating religion and the pious teenage soul. No one is perfect. Just because you believe a certain way doesn't mean that everyone will be THAT CERTAIN WAY. To err is to be human. We're humans. And no one is perfect. We make mistakes.

Oh btw, I was going to do something similar to this (but only with 5 books, I'm poor D: ) but my professors seem determined for me to die so they made exams right as this came up. So my contest will have to wait. =x Great idea, though!

  95. Thanks you for standing up against censorship and standing up for the themes that books represent. The great thing about books is you get to choose to read it or not and imagine what this world would be like without these "controversial book" There was a time that books about interacial marriage or female infidelity would have been banned. Thanks
