Cupcakes and Writing!

Anyone who follows me on twitter knows that my latest obsession is the show DC Cupcakes. I mean, what's not to like? These two sisters open up a cupcake shop, make cupcakes all day, work with a bad ass ninja baker and wear pink aprons and wellies! Ummmm, sign me up?

Granted, their cupcakes are not vegan, but still, I'm enjoying myself.

Anyway, part of what I like so much about the show is the fact that the bussiness is run by two sisters--a fantasy that me and my own sister have, though if we ever went into business we'd be selling vegan baked goods, fruit smoothies and wheat grass. Ooooooh wheat grass.

So Friday night we decided....WE should totally make cupcakes.

Vegancupcakes...

THEMED cupcakes...

FANCY cupcakes!

We went to the store and agonized forever about ingredients and color choices and designs, etc., and finally decided to do a summer-theme, making watermelon-like cupcakes.

This meant, green cupcake holders, "watermelon pink" colored frosting, and black sprinkles--to be the seeds.

We had visions!

Like this!

Or this!

Or even this!

What we ended up with...looked more like this...

But you know what?

They tasted damn good! Mushy, melty and disfigured and all. Especially the frosting which looked more like "bubble gum" pink than "watermelon."

This all kind of got me thinking about writing (aha this post has a point!)

Sometimes, we have to just accept our writing for what it is at the moment. Rough drafts are rough and tough, and look like disfigured cupcakes sometimes even when you're imagining perfection in your mind. But unlike a bad cupcake, you can usually fix bad writing.

But really it's all about the process anyway.

Hopefully you found some truth in that.

Though I admit, I mostly wanted to talk about cupcakes.

I mean, how else should one start their Monday morning?

Right?

:-)

  1. The cupcake bug is everywhere!

I was bitten and felt like making mini banana muffins with creamcheese frosting.....

    They were so yummy.

    They are now so gone.

    Bummer.

  2. I got sucked into all those baking type shows. Ace of Cakes (looooveee Duff) and Cake Boss. I was all pumped for DC Cupcakes. I love seeing their creations, but I just wish everyone on that show would stop trying to act. It's so obviously fake it pains me. But I still watch cause it gives me ideas of what to try to bake. Like yesterday I made Alice in Wonderland themed cupcakes for my niece's birthday party. (Just a note: fondant icing melts very easily with summer weather even inside the house. Put it in the fridge!!)

  3. All that matters is the taste, right?

I haven't heard of this show before, but I'll definitely be checking it out. I love baking shows :)

  6. I agree with Shelley; the cupcake bug really is everywhere! There's reality shows about them and celebrities raving about them and I read at least three blog posts a day mentioning cupcakes. When did this cupcake craze begin???

Who cares! Let's just eat them!!!

  7. And now I want cupcakes. I got distracted by the melted cupcake because it looked all delicious and gooey and probably has a great taste even though it's spewing frosting like a volcano. What were we talking about?

I love making, and eating, cupcakes too. Yeah they may not always look amazing, but I eat them anyway. lol.

  9. Ha! I just bought cupcake liners yesterday at the store because I've been craving cupcake. Although I do plan on using butter, sugar, etc.! I would like to taste a vegan cupcake at some point though. I always say that it doesn't matter what it looks like, what matters is how they taste!
As for the writing...sigh. I just finished all of my rewrites, edits, etc. and sent the MS off to be critiqued. Yikes! In the meantime, I'm about to begin my new, awesome, totally cool idea. Now I just have to figure out how to start it!

  11. Do you have the cookbook "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World"? Any cookbook by Isa is amazing--I have every single one. I had a cupcake craving the other night an make chocolate ones with coffee. Yum-o!

  12. Looks like you already have material for your first article as a Vegan Examiner. :)

  14. yay for cupcakes!

And oh my gosh, I was looking at a cupcake website from someone I now follow on Twitter. They were on Cupcake Wars, which is another great cupcake show. They sell cupcake mixes and they have a vegan chocolate. That totally made me think of you. It's Red Velvet Stefanie if you're interested, but chocolate is the only vegan one I saw there.

I can't wait for the end of this month. I'm gonna add some liquor to cupcakes and frosting as part of my birthday celebration (meaning, me and maybe mom & stepdad).

    mmm cupcakes...
