The Craft as a YA Novel

I don't know what it is, but something about hearing The Pierces "Secret" every week on Pretty Little Liars starts dragging up memories of watching The Craft!

"Made of awesome"

You know that totally awesomesauce miracle of the 90's with Robin Tunney--with hair!--because you know, she shaved it all off in Empire Records (for the record, another awesomesauce miracle of the 90's).  And also Neve Campbell was in it, who I hearted so badly because of Party of Five, even though I can now see that it is Neve who is Kristin Stewart's acting role model--obviously, because they both like to act by taking breathes...all kinds of breathes, like deep breathes, and catching their breath, and little hitches of breath and saying half words...anyway, back to my point.

So...I was just thinking...how cool would it be if The Craft had been a novel?

Based on the time period it came out and the subject matter, etc...I'm going to go out on a limb here and say L.J. Smith would have written it. Probably. Or not...

Anyway here's why it would have made an AWESOME novel.

1) New girl in town! Come on, everybody loves the new girl, I know we're a little sick of her at times, but...chances are if you fly into the movie book on a plane--we're going to love you.

2) New girl in town who gets mixed up with monsters! BUT unlike the majority of our new girls who find themselves suddenly dating a vampire/werewolf/angel/fairy/shape shifter/merman? Sarah gets mixed up with a bunch of witches---her new friends! LOVE IT.

3) Cool creepy witch lady who owns the New Age store. Lyria I think her name was---so cool. I'd love to see a character like her in a novel.

4) In this story of magic, sex, and death, there are real consquences! You get what you put out there times three, hurt someone and it will hurt you, and if you hurt someone....you REALLY hurt someone---it's not just for show.

5) Case in point--Chris (who was Neve Campbell's boyfriend in Scream and a total psycho in there except for when he was being kinda cute). Chris was the hot guy who flirted Sarah and took her out when no one else was nice to her...and then told the whole school they had slept together (badly) when in fact they had merely kissed. Sarah kind of got the best revenge ever--I mean, how many times in high school did you wish you could just put that one guy under a love spell? Well, Sarah did! Win! But then she realized, she didn't really love him. Fail! Also...the spell made him kind of a rapist. Also...it left him dead. Yikes...

6) Sarah is the most powerful witch of all! That's right...hidden in the final scenes of the movie in a way where it's so not cheesy (its not!) Sarah realizes that her dead mom (because you got to have a dead mom) was a witch, an uber powerful one and now Sarah has the power. The power to stop...

7) Nancy! Oh man, the epitome of keep your friends close and your enemies closer--she was a frenemy before frenemies were invented (or...ok before I discovered them and mind you, I watched this movie when I was like 10, or 12...one of those). So many books focus on the romantic relationships of characters---here we got to focus on friendship...and enemies.

8) Nancy was crazy!!!!!!!! I'd LOVE to read some of the dialogue she'd have in the fake YA novel version of The Craft.

9) The Magic--whoops I almost forgot that, but when the girls spells start working...it's SO fun! And then they have sleepover parties and watch reruns of Bewitched--aside from the whole turning into psycho killers who make you think your family died in a plane crash as a practical joke (LOL...wait...WHAT?) they were pretty sweet friends.

10) Ummmm...The Craft just has that quality about it that made me love it--it was funny, and scary and dramatic. I may have seen it more times than I'd like to admit to...also I cannot be held responsible for the kitchen knife I spray painted to look a little more witch-like when I convinced my friends to call the corners. Sorry mom.

So yeah....those are my thoughts of the day.

  1. I love this movie and agree that there should be/have been a novel version of it. :-) I first heard of the Craft thanks to Charmed.

  3. Even as a dude I loved this movie - and it seemed like it had some pretty authentic Wicca in it, but I don't know for sure.

Also, I found Fairuza Balk to be totally hot - like CRAZY hot. But also scary.

  6. Man, this takes me back. Talk about a guilty pleasure. I have to fight the urge to watch it anytime it's on.

LOVED Empire Records, too. Just got the director's cut or whatever they call it and it's pretty awesome. Robin Tunney with hair, lol.

"You did have hair when you went in there, right?"

"Yeah. It's still in the sink if you want to glue it." ;)

  7. The Craft! OMG me and my friends were obsessed... OBSESSED with this movie in 7th grade. And then they eventually stabbed me in the back. Guess I was Sarah? hehe.

  8. Years after first seeing and love The Craft, I am still sad "light as a feather, stiff as a board" never worked for me and my friends.

  11. Words cannot express just how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie. Like, hardcore love this movie. I think this calls for an FNC movie marathon.

Also, I'm pretty sure both Lois Duncan and LJ Smith secretly wrote The Craft:

    http://www.amazon.com/Secret-Circle-Initiation-Captive-Part/dp/0061670855/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_11

    On two sidenotes:

    1) One of my freshman year college roomates looked EXACTLY like Faruiza Balk, and turned out to be about as crazy as Nancy.

    2) Can we just take a moment for this original LJ Smith cover? http://www.amazon.com/Forbidden-Game-Collectors-Omnibus-Smith/dp/0671017160/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_4

(I totally have this book with this cover on it somewhere.)

  12. Favorite movie of all time--right up there with Practical Magic! I've always thought it would make a WONDERFUL novel--and considering the talent that's swimming around in the literary pool right now, I'd love to see someone actually write it. =D

  13. This movie brings back memories! Hex Hall reminded me a lot of the Craft, at least at the beginning.

  14. I used to watch this all the time when it came out. I haven't seen it in years, and now I want to watch it all over again. Nancy was such a crazy snatch! This would make a great novel - you should do more posts like these. You're a genius at them.

  15. Um... I think I remember The Craft. Wasn't that with Fairuza Balk, who made a teeny, tiny career for herself playing crazy biotches for a couple of years there in the 90s? Yes, I think it was.

I liked it too. But I'd prefer it as an adult novel. Y'know. It's how I roll. :)
