Thanks for all of the input yesterday you guys on the different ways you wrote your books, or the ways in which writing your various books have differed. I thought I'd share my own way of writing that I alluded to in the last post.
So for the record, I'm a plotter. A MAJOR plotter, to the point where I'm almost anal about it. I also can only write things in order.
This is funny because in real life (or rather outside my writing life) I'm a very go with the flow kind of person.
*Side Note* I've noticed that how organized a writer is in real life seems to be completely inverse to how organized their writing is. Melissa Marr revealed when I met her that she has to have everything on a schedule, and gets really annoyed if something doesn't arrive the minute its supposed to, but she's a pantser and writes scenes out of order and sometimes writes things without understanding why. I'm pretty cool with things happening when they happen (to an extent) but I must write in order and I don't write ANYTHING without there being a major reason for it.
Anyway, back to plotting.
So I always start off with two big images in my head. An image of my character at the beginning of the novel and an image of her at the end, so I know exactly where she starts and how she's changed by the end.
I also get ideas for a bunch of scenes that I will write in pretty loose skeletal form, knowing exactly where they fit into my plot.
Then with my beginning and ending in place and smattering of random scenes, I plot the rest of the story and then organize my plot into chapter summaries.
Here's where I fudge with my plot a bit. I don't usually steer off the course of my plot, but my chapter summaries often shift around a bit.
As I write (IN ORDER) I get a feel for if the plot is working. If I feel like something is off, then I'll stop there and rework the plot until it feels right. This usally means going back to the beginning. I always go back to the beginning (like Inigo in The Princess Bride) until I fix the problem.
I know some people can work problems out in their head and chart scenes in their mind and know what will work and what won't.
I'm not one of those people.
I'm a trial and error girl. So I will write a scene and then rewrite in a totally different way over and over until I stumble on the one that works.
Anyway then with my plot fully there, my chapter summaries (which do leave a bit of wiggle room for surprises and organic shifting) and any problematic scenes or plotlines worked out, I write a really rough draft. The way I think of my first draft is word vomit.
I know that's so gross, but it's what works for me. I have to literally vomit every word and idea onto the page before I clean it up and mold it into something nice.
So that is what I did for STOLEN, which then took 6 weeks to write (granted this was after 2 years of trying to write it with different plotlines and even in the beginning as a middle grade novel).
Now revision was a WHOLE other story.
But basically, that was how I did it. A lot of organizing, a lot of roughing it, a lot of trial and error.
So tell me, what do you think about the whole organized writer with a disorganized life? Are you organized as a writer and chill in life, or chill as writer and pantsing it, but super organized in life?
And I'd love to hear more about how you all plot and write.
I have to really agree with the whole organized writer disorganized life. Except with me it comes in bursts, I can have moments as a writer when I'm really organized and it's then when my life dips into utter chaos. But when my life is extra organized my writing is all over the board. But other days I'm stuck in an odd limbo where I'm neither, and then can't write anything. Great post, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI'm both. I can be organized and get all messed up when my routine gets altered but I can be forgetful and disorganized. Writing I am both, while mostly a pantser. I write most of the book from start to finish, no outline but have the whole idea played out hundreds of times in my head. But sometimes I'll write a scene out or order. 90k novel finished this year, 67k in one month, about 10k written out of order. Minimal outline in middle of writing.
ReplyDeleteI'm chaotic, organized and multi-tasking. That's my writing.
I think you are right. I'm organised in life but not in writing. Although I do have moments where the line blurs and I moments of OCD about everything. lol.
ReplyDeleteI do write my book from start to finish in order though. My next wip is another story...
This is very interesting. Thanks for sharing this. So far I'm a panster but in real life I like order. It's really weird. I've realized how much my story has changed since the first draft--how bad that was. I'm revising now and changing a lot. I'm thinking of trying to loosely outline the next WiP and see how that works.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I am overly organized in every aspect of my life except writing. I tried the whole index card, color coding, outlining path. It sucked up so much time I wasn't writing. I wound up with a very messy spiral notebook holding random thoughts that I tote around. I simply sit and write, then occasionally sift through my notes, (which I can barely read), and keep moving forward. Everyone is different.
ReplyDeleteLOL. I'm very organized with my writing. I write outlines, detailed character sketches, one liners, etc before I start.
ReplyDeleteToo bad this level of organization doesn't carry through into other aspects of my life. ;)
I love how you picture your character at the beginning of the novel and then again at the end. That is a brilliant idea! Hope you don't mind if I borrow it... As for organization, I'm pretty much organized *cough~anal* about everything I do, inside of writing and out! Though my outline is a loose one.
ReplyDeleteI have to disagree! I'm ultra-organized in both life and writing! I'm a planner in life and a plotter on the page. I'm all-around super organized!
ReplyDeleteI tried to pants my novel. It didn't work. I'm outlining now. Grr...

Thank you for this post -- I found it really encouraging to learn that even though you wrote STOLEN in 6 weeks that you had spent a couple years struggling with it.
ReplyDelete(You know I'm NOT saying I'm glad you struggled. Right?)
I'm not a huge plotter, but I also feel like I get lost in my ms when I write like a panster. (That's why I have four chapters and 40k in words...)
I think I'm an in-betweener... who is about to turn her own word vomit into word confetti. You know: please remind me to step back from the ledge overlooking inky water. And stuff.
Interesting. Hum, I don’t know. I’m organized to a point and then go with the flow, in writing and life.
ReplyDeleteHmm, well I like seeing my characters at the beginning as well as the end before I start writing, just as you do. But I also tend to go with the flow in the middle of the book...basically, I know what I want the ending to be, but I can do whatever I want in the middle of the book as long as I reach that particular ending in the, well, end.
ReplyDeleteThat definitely sounds confusing. D: I used to be organized but that lovely skill has somewhat deteriorated over the years. xD

I'm an extremely organized person in my personal life. My spices are alphabetized. (Yes, I know I'm a little weird.) My books are alpha by author, even ARCs. A place for everything and, for the most part, everything in its place.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm pantsing this novel all the way. The only thing I've had in the back of my mind from the beginning was how I want it to end. Everything else has just surprised me.
Lovely new background of your blog, Frankie. But the tabs at the top aren't working for me. Is this still a WIP?
This is amazing. I posted very close to the same subject as you did today. AND I write my books like you. I come up with the opening and the ending and then I get busy.
ReplyDeleteWhat is this called when two minds think alike.... ;)
I'm just sayin...
I'm neither, and then can't write anything. Great post, thanks for sharing.

I have a general story in my head, and come up with it as I go along, but then again, I've never actually finished a novel....... You know how I am with organization and planning....
