Deciding on a name for your characters can be one of the most important decisions you make as a writer. Especially if you're the sort of person who considers things like meaning, origin, culture, history, alliteration and popularity of a given name in a certain year (remember how Bella notes immediately that names like Rosalie, Alice and Emmett are old fashioned unpopular names....first tip off they are vampires).
It's easy to learn the meaning behind a name by picking up a baby naming book or doing a quick google search and often a name can help give you some insight into symbolism behind your character or their role in your story. Sometimes we just like the way a name sounds...this was the case with Maggie Stiefvater and naming her wolf-boy Sam, it was all about the way she could hear Grace saying it and the emotion behind it.
Names can tell you a lot about a character...or it can say a lot about a character's parents...Hermione Granger for instance...though Hermione is the female form of Hermes, who is the Greek god og messages and communication...who always has the answers for Harry? And remember how she sends him the message about the basilisk when she's petrified...with a note in her hand... But beyond that, according to J.K. Rowling, she felt that Hermione's parents, well educated and working as dentists would have picked the name from a Shakespeare play...just because they liked it.
But whatever your reason for choosing your characters' names and however much symbolism you put behind it, one thing that's important to remember is that a character's name then becomes part of their identity and most likely at some point it's something they have given some thought to--at least once. I mean, how many times have you thought about your name and liked it, or hated it, or wondered about if your parents have given you a different name, or shuddered to think about the other name you almost got.
And since my name is somewhat unusual...I thought I'd give you the story behind my name and how it's affected me and yeah...ok...so technically I'm not a character...but the girls in the FNC all call me high-concept, so close enough.
Ok...here you go.
The story behind my name:
My full name is Frankie Diane Mallis...which I think you guys know.
It's baby book meaning is...Divine Evil Spear (ok so I played with that a bit, but its better than the alternative of Frenchman Divine Evil....yeah thought so). Now possibly if it turns out in some kind of loopy Stranger Than Fiction twilight zone thingy I'm actually a character that someone is writing a story about...quite possibly there is a very significant meaning to that...like I'm a divine spear...that's going to kill all evil. But...most likely....I'm not. And so...the baby name book interpretation doesn't do much for me... at least not on a day to day basis.
My name's origin...comes from my maternal grandfather Frank David Millman. So automatically this teaches you two things about me as a character....1) I was born into a family that honors tradition and values family and 2) (this isn't always necessarily the case but it is with us) My family is Jewish...and traditionally you always name your child after deceased relatives.
What else about origin...well I've partly been informed by my grandfather's legacy...he was a psychologist (if I'd pursued an actual career in psychology I'd be a third generation psychologist), and...he was a writer. He used to write mystery and detective short stories that were published in magazines. And...well I'm a writer too.
What about my parents...So we know where the initials F.D.M. came from...but I could have easily been Fiona Danielle Mallis, or Franchescha Deborah Mallis, or Fern Delores Mallis (YUCK). But luckily (Thank goodness) my parents went with Frankie...which is a totally unisex name, but most people seem to think it's still more of a boy's name than a girl's. It's also more of a nickname usually than a real name...usually short for Franchesca or Francis. What does this say about my parents? Mostly...they don't really care what anyone thinks, they have their own standards and do things their way and aren't guided by trends or the norm. Also they don't seem to like fancy...or Franchesca it would be. These things have kind of seeped their way into me and the way I live and make my choices...
So that's the background behind my name and you can start to see how its shaped me a little...but how has my name actually affected me?
A Girl Named Frankie
Icebreaker!
99% of the people I meet are bound to ask me, "Is that your real name?" or "What's Frankie short for?" or "Is Frankie you're nickname?". Which I don't mind at all, answering this question is as normal to me as answering "I'm good, how are you?". What it does is it creates an instant ice breaker for me and anyone I meet. Blogger Natalie Bahm who I got to meet briefly at the SCBWI NY conference said I was the first extroverted writer she met and I really think its just because of my name. I'm used to socializing and making people feel comfortable around me because I usually can bond with people instantly...just over my name. People tend to feel like they can talk to me because they automatically have something to say:-)
But its a boys name....
So I kind of had a phase where I didn't like my name...maybe around age 4 or 5. I was convinced it was a boy's name and my parents needed to change it immediately. But...I was also convinced that the president had passed a law making it illegal for girls to wear pants and for an entire year would only wear skirts and dresses...don't ask.
But now I love it. However...it can be confusing for some people. I've had plenty of substitute teachers take attendance and not see me raise my hand and ask "Where is he?" and during one SCBWI conference when I took part in a group critique I had comments like "Wow you really can write girls well for a guy."
So I made the choice to use Diane professionally so just in case you didn't see my picture, you'd know I was a girl.
Ok time to wrap this up...my name overall has informed a lot of my values, but beyond the symbolism --which only the imaginary author writing my story cares about along with her small legion of obsessed fans--it's mostly had an effect on my personality and how I deal in social situations...I tend to be very outgoing, joke around a lot (which you have to do after youve been accused of having a boy's name) and I'm also pretty open with people---hey you learn all of what I just said about me within a minute of meeting me on some level or another.
So...how do your characters feel about their names? How has their name affected a part of their life? Beyond what the name means to you, what does it mean to them? How has it shaped their values or influenced the way they feel in social situations particularly if their name is incredibly plain and popular, or unusual, or comes with a unique spelling? I'd love to hear about your characters and their names:)
Interesting post! I love the name Frankie! My MC's names are Snow & Vaughn, I knew I wanted the MC to have hippy parents so it just stuck, her brother's name is Lennon (guess after who?) I love them, and it fits them.
ReplyDeleteErica, on the other hand, a little boring. I always wanted to be named Samantha, be Sam for short. I was almost named Ruby, after my grandma's last name! I thought about using it for a pen name, cause I love how it sounds with Chapman... we'll see ;o)
Great post!
This is a great post, Frankie!
ReplyDeleteI have the same advantage with the name of Amalia-- it's so rare, especially in combination with my last name (both maiden and married) that I get an instant response from people upon introduction-- either because they can't pronounce it (frequently) or because it's so unique. I hated it when I was a kid too :) I think everyone goes through that phase.
As far as my characters go-- in GENERATIONS, my MC names were pretty much dictated for me already. Adam and Eve and Thor had to be, well, Adam and Eve and Thor. Same with Helen and Theseus. (Though, I did start to notice that I seem to have a thing with male names that begin with TH. Thor. Theseus. Thairon. All my leading men are TH names!)
Thairon is the only one I got to pick a name for. The canon explanation for it, is that his family is Scandinavian, and his name is a bastardization of Thorin, which is a form of Thor. (Thorin is actually the name of one of my husband's cousins. I've never met the guy, but hopefully he won't think I stole it from him! I was using it before I knew he existed!) Thairon didn't mind having such a bizarre name until he became a billionaire-- then he wanted it changed so he was less easily stalked by crazies, but it was such a huge hassle to do it with all the business and banking complications that he gave up the idea, and satisfied himself with lots of private security instead.
I don't feel any sympathy for him about it. :P
That's really interesting Frankie... I love gender neutral names for girls. Really I always have! I've had a baby names list running since I was like... 8 or so? And the top girl name for YEARS was Tyler, haha.
ReplyDeleteMy MC's name is Jane... I liked it because of the whole "plain jane" saying... And she's the complete OPPOSITE of plain :-)
hahahahha reminds me of being a 3rd generation matchmaker. Gotta be born into it... or jewish.
ReplyDeletelol. miss that show at 4 AM
JM <3
Another great post! It was interesting learning about your name. My MC's names are Anna and Ian. I really liked the name Anna and as she has blossomed it seems to fit her well. Ian on the other hand was a name I have always loved and if I had another son-- I would give that child the name. Let's just say I have no plans on having anymore kids so Ian has become my MC. I have tried change his name but it fits him.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Great post, Frankie! Let's see...as you know, my MC has gone through some names changes. First it was Paige, followed by Bri, back to Paige and now she is Violet. At this point, Violet is growing on me. I do confess though, that I'm still in love with the name Paige. That was her name when I first started and it fit her personality.
ReplyDeleteIt took me a long time to settle on my characters name. I’m glad for the find and replace feature. I would read over my story and until the name rung true I changed it.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so I'm still not partial to Simon after all these years. It's a Greek name, for crying out loud, and I'm about as Mediterranean as Molson Ice. Plus, it means either "snub-nose" or "hearing," depending on what source you consult. Yeeaahh, whenever we talked about what our name means in elementary school, it was 50-50 as to whether I'd get laughed at.
ReplyDeleteNow Craig, on the other hand, is a much more Scottish name, and I like it much better. It appeals to my patriotic spirit, and means "cliff," or "rock." And, let's face it, Rock is cooler than Snub-nose any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
But, unlike you, Frankie, I'm terribly withdrawn and shy in real life. I mumble, hide behind thick prescription glasses, walk with a shuffling kind of slouch, and sweat profusely whenever I meet anyone outside of my immediate family. Just ask Laurel. She knows.
I could be lying, though. I've been known to do that before. But that story about skydiving with a bottle of tequila? Totally true. Yup.
P.S. Word ver. = coodis? Really? As in things that girls think boys have in 3rd grade? Huh..
I'm picky about my characters' names, too. Mostly I just have to wade around in a name until something feels right. My FMC's last name is from Latin, and then there's one character based off a mythological name, but for the most part I just play with names until I find the right one. My MMC even had his first name become his last name when I decided I didn't like the name he had.
ReplyDeleteNaming is the hardest part of writing for me. I can procrastinate with naming for weeks. And I'm anal enough that I MUST have the perfect name BEFORE I start the manuscript. (My current WIP names are Lenore, Hazel, Gage, Jude, and Tristan. And there are reasons for each.)
ReplyDeleteI think my name anxiety came from my own name. My name is Cherokee Summer, and whenever people find it out, they always go nuts about something. My parents weren't hippies, and I honestly have NO clue why they went with Cherokee. Obviously, I go by Summer and always have--only my grandmother, all her friends, and my oldest cousin call me Cherokee. I've gotten so many jokes about being named after a season that I've pretty much lost my sense of humor over it, since every person who tells the joke thinks it's original and must be the first time I've ever heard it.
My parents were originally going to name me Sabrina Odessa, until they realized what my initials would be, as my last name started with a B.
Sometimes I wish they'd named me that anyway. :-)
Great post, Frankie! My children each have a middle name that honors someone in our family. My middle name is Kristine. My dad wanted to name me Shannon Michelle, but my mom thought Shannon Michelle LeMoine sounded too much like a French hooker! True story! Ha ha ha. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am totally the writer who looks up a name either before naming the character or sometimes the character comes with that name & I have to see if my mind named them appropriately...does that make sense? ;o)
ReplyDeleteAs for my current characters...my female name means: favored grace/delicate meadow. My male name: to tame, subdue/one whose spirit impacts another beyond all measure.
My name has always been one that I love. Courtney is more common now than when I was little but its meaning was something my parents never looked into until well into my midteens & boy did they get it right. I was named after an actor my mother saw on TV while in the hospital after my birth. I was supposed to be Laura (meaning: from the laurel plant) Leigh but a cousin was born 1 week prior to me and she was given Laura Leigh. My mother wanted Leigh no matter what, but she wanted me unique.
So I am.
I have always been a girly girl who is not afraid to be a tomboy when necessary or needed. I also never questioned the fact that I am a princess. ;o)
Sure enough: Courtney - of the Court, of Royal birth & class i.e. Courtenay of French origin. My middle name: Leigh means delicate.
Yep - Royalty is a part of me *wink*.
Btw I love your name. I love the origin & most of all I love the tradition yours embodies as well as the reverence to someone before you.
oh & I am the only child NOT named after anyone in my family (3 siblings). They each have at least one family name.
ReplyDeleteHermione was also the name of Helen of Troy's daughter (ya know, once Helen went back home with Menelaus).
ReplyDeleteMy name means "wind" in the Irish form, but the Hebrew form, spelled "Moriah" is the name of the mountain Abraham is ordered to sacrifice Isaac on in the Bible.
I like my name, except for when I'm compared to Mariah Carey. Not cool.
In my WiP, the main character is named Jane because that's what my dream told me her name was. Also, she has similarities to Jane Eyre. Her love interest, August, got his name because it was popular during the time period... and because I love the way it sounds.
Great post, Miss Frankie! My names for my characters are chosen more like Maggie's -- just a feeling for what sits right for them. Most of my character names are current, but I noticed that I tend to give them short names, and (as you know), I've had to shift some names to distinguish them.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Frankie! I always hated my name, plain old Carol, which is probably why I use fairly uncommon names for my characters.
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of baby naming sites I go to for ideas; usually I at least know what letter of the alphabet I want them to start with.
One time the name Treasure Beaumont popped into my head and I based a whole NaNo novel on her character.
My current MC names are Hannah and Kelvin. One of the minor characters in this WIP underwent a name change about five times before I finally settled on Nathaniel - he'll be the main character of the sequel. :-)
Wow...great post! I love learning more about your name, your family and you. :)
ReplyDeletePersonally, I have absolutely no idea what my mother was thinking when she named me. Obviously she wasn't thinking I'd have to endure decades of a particular Beach Boys song being sung every time someone hears my name for the first time.
As a writer, naming my characters is one of the most difficult things that I do and it's really not at all unusual for my MC's names to change as I write because as the story unfolds I often find that who I thought the characters were really isn't who they are and the name I thought was so perfect for them no longer is. Maybe that goes back to my own desire to change my name! :)
LOL. I love all the Frankie facts.
ReplyDeleteMy MC actually feels VERY strongly about her name. First she insisted I change it. I had originally named her Agnes...cause I liked the idea of her having a name she hated, so I could make lots of jokes about it. She did not like that. Not one bit. In fact...she kinda stopped talking to me (yes, I might be one of the most schizophrenic writers ever. My characters are so real it's scary)
So I went through like 4 baby name books and I had this big long list of names and narrowed it down to 10, then to five and well...she picked Sophie. I didn't like Sophie. Sophie is the name of my in-law's dog--not something I wanted to share with my MC. But, she liked it. She liked that it means wisdom. So...Sophie she became.
At several points I've considered changing it (pretty much every time I find a book with another MC named Sophie, like The Alchemist, Hex Hall, etc, etc, etc) but the darn girl doesn't want me to. So...she can stay Sophie for now. But if my publisher wants me to change it someday her and I will have a LONG talk. ;)
LOVED this post! Mostly because I do sooo much thinking when it comes to character's names.
ReplyDeleteMy two MC's are Channing and Reed.
And the whole boy name for a girl is funny b/c I named my youngest Karter Trisyn (a girl - and my husband still hates her name) and my middle one's middle name is Tyler.
I <3 unisex names...
Great post! :) I always have trouble trying to think of the perfect names for my characters. It's hard for me to find ones that seem to fit them. Like what this post talked aobut, I'm really into symbolism and deep meanings. :P
ReplyDeleteFunny thing: My name is Wendy, and I was actually named after the fast food restaurant. :P
Have a good day!
I always used to hate that my name was so rare and different. But I love it now :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post. Naming is maybe the hardest thing I have to do. Especially when it comes to male names. A lot of times I just give up and go with pronouns in shorter pieces. :) Or I just recycle names.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I love your name.
I used the name Frankie for a character once -- she was a spunky redhead that all the girls hated and all the boys secretly admired.
ReplyDeletePicking character names is so tricky -- I never feel ready to write a character until her name is perfect!
Girl, me and you are in the same boat. My name is Roni, that's it, not short for anything. But I get asked that question all the time. And I'm also named after my maternal grandfather (Ronald).
ReplyDeleteHaving a boy's name was annoying when I was younger, especially when people pronounced it like rice-a-roni instead of Rah-nee. But now I like it, it's unique. :)
Erica ooooh those are all such COOL names. Im intrigued by your characters just for that. And Ruby Chapman does have a cool ring to it...hhmmmm
ReplyDeleteAmalia T. , yes rare and unusual names def have their advantages! And LOL, good story about your character.
Sara McClung ♥ yeah its fun when your character is the opposite of their name, and I like boy names too!
Julie, LOL I know! Come home so we can watch a marathon!
Christine Danek, thanks yeah....I had names picked out for characters in an older story that were totally what I wanted to name my kids...now that I dropped that story I guess the names are still available to me if I want:)
Kelly, yah you're def going through a bunch, and yeah....Paige did seem to fit her character.
Southpaw , oh boy, I dont know that feature and hope I never need to, yikes!
Simon C. Larter, LOL you are such a liar, you're probably totally normal and cool in real life and I liked the name SImon, I used it for a character in a short story once. But yeah...I get the Craig thing. And ewww cooties! or coodis!
Heather, you sound like me, I love playing with mythological names and latin. One of my MC's sisters is named Arianna, from Ariadne...from Aphrodite and she's so beautiful she stops traffic...on the other hand she likes to sew...Arachne...:-)
Summer, ooooh nice names! I have a Tristan. and I love your name! But I get how the joke thing is kind of old. I still have some people who sing Frankie and Johnny to me and Im not a fan.
Shannon O'Donnell, omg that's too funny!!! I wouldnt have that, but I can see it.
Southern Princess, yeah Im the same way and OMG that is too funny about your name, thats perfect! I love it!
Mariah Irvin, yes! right, isn't that where Shakespeare got the name from too? And I love your name, I think its sooo pretty, though I wouldnt want to be compared to Mariah Carey either. And oooh Jane and August...I like the ring of that.
Donna Gambale, hehe thank you! And yeah....I have noticed that;)
C R Ward, oooh Treasure Beaumont is a COOL name. And baby name books rule!
Rhonda, awww I LOVE that Beach Boys song like there's no tomorrow, but I can understand, people sing Frankie and Johhny to me a lot! And yay Im glad you liked the post. Its funny how your names change, once I start working with a character and they have their name I can't change it at all.
Shannon Messenger, hahaha I knew you'd say that but it really does fit bc Sophie is wisdom and your MC is a girl genius.
Tiffany Neal, oh those names are soooo cute!
The Red Angel, oh wow I thought maybe Wendy from that other Beach Boys song. But yeah the symbolism is too much fun to play with!
Have a good day!
Lenore, aww I love your name, its so pretty.
sarahjayne smythe, yeah it can be really tough and thank you:-)
Guinevere, OOOH! Can you be the author who is writing my life in the Stranger Than Fiction twilight zone thingy? Can you throw in a really hot boyfriend too? Thanks!
Roni, aaah so you totally understand!! :-) I like it too, its memorable.
